Houston, TX

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) is the 7th largest district in the country and yet only one of over a dozen districts that serve children in Houston. District demographics continue to shift, with 62% Hispanic students, 25% African American, 3% Asian and 8% white in 2016. Sup. Terry Grier who led the district for almost 7 years, announced his plan to leave by Spring 2016. The board named as interim Deputy Superintendent and CFO Ken Huewitt while they conduct a search for a replacement. Over a decade ago, the district made bold moves toward decentralization, weighted student funding and opening up choice among its traditional district and charter schools and those elements of the the strategy are still in place today.
