Special Education at a Crossroads: Ensuring Equity and Inclusion for Students with Disabilities
This brief outlines the ongoing challenges and offers recommendations to reshape how America’s schools serve students with disabilities.
Lanya (Lane) McKittrick is a senior research analyst at the Center on Reinventing Public Education, where she leads projects related to special education and families. She completed her PhD in Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado, where she is adjunct faculty, her MA in Organizational Leadership at Gonzaga University, and her BA in Economics at the University of Washington. Her primary research interests are collaboration and family-professional partnerships. Her interest in special education is rooted in her personal experience as a mom to four sons, including two who are deafblind and one with learning disabilities. In addition to her work as a researcher, Lane is a parent advocate and is actively involved in helping families of children with low incidence disabilities navigate the IEP process.
