The Next Education Workforce™

Exploring how team-based teaching impacts educational outcomes

The Next Education Workforce™ (NEW) is a model of team-based strategic school staffing created by Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation. Instead of the traditional “one teacher, one classroom” staffing structure, NEW aims to better serve students and create sustainable careers for educators by:

  • Building teams of educators (e.g., lead teachers, novice teachers, content specialists, paraprofessionals, community educators) who work together to support shared groups of students.
  • Personalizing learning by leveraging the diverse skills of team members, so students can get more individualized attention and targeted support.
  • Expanding educator roles and pathways, so educators have new ways to enter the profession and can grow in their careers without necessarily leaving the classroom.
  • Making the profession more sustainable by distributing workload, increasing decision-making authority, reducing burnout, and providing mentoring and collaboration opportunities.
  • Building stronger community ties, since schools can include specialists and external partners as part of the teaching team.
