The State of the American Student

CRPE's annual report on how students are faring in the United States—and what they need to thrive.

The State of the American Student began in 2022, examining how students were faring in the immediate aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The report has evolved into CRPE’s annual situation report that documents student and family needs and highlights strategies to create a more equitable, personalized, and resilient American education system. Each report includes a rich and powerful synthesis of data, quotes, effective policy and practice, and provocative recommendations and proposals to address student needs at a large scale. CRPE collaborates with external policy experts, advocates, and other partners to weigh in on the report and provide feedback.

2024

In CRPE’s third State of the Student report, we examine how the pandemic disproportionately affected students with unique learning needs. English learners, students with disabilities, and homeless youth had higher rates of absenteeism, disrupted services, and setbacks. Our analysis points to a dysfunctional system that served these students badly before the pandemic hit and remains inadequate. This report highlights challenges experienced by special student populations and calls on schools, policymakers, advocates, and philanthropists to enact systemic reforms that would benefit all students.

2023

The Covid-19 pandemic and related school closures led to unprecedented academic setbacks for American students. This second edition focuses especially on students nearing graduation or who have already graduated from high school. The traditional pathways to college and career were already not working for too many of these students, and he pandemic made everything worse. However, some schools, school systems, states, and postsecondary institutions are demonstrating what’s possible when leaders are willing to rethink outdated approaches and center instruction and support on what students need most. This report also features essays from prominent leaders in education, government, and advocacy.

2022

The inaugural State of the American Student Report draws on data CRPE collected and synthesized over the course of the pandemic. It outlines the contours of the crisis American students faced during the Covid-19 pandemic and begins to chart a path to recovery and reinvention for all students. This includes the essential work of building a new and better approach to public education that ensures an educational crisis of this magnitude cannot happen again. The urgency and complexity of this situation require an ambitious long-term recovery plan that ensures every student gets what they need before they graduate, no matter what.
